CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Leon Himmel was standing in the hotel hallway, waiting for Kappel to come out of his meeting. He was pacing back and forth impatiently, willing for the door to open. Patience was not his strong suit, and as he looked at the increasingly sullen looks on the faces of the bodyguards outside the room, he realised tolerance was not their strong suit.

Suddenly, his phone vibrated and purred in his pocket. Relieved to have something to break the monotony, he pulled out the phone and answered.

“Yes?”

The voice on the other end was extremely nervous. “It went wrong. Three of ours are dead, and the other was captured alive. It was that same bitch that tried to take Herr Kappel out last time, remember?”

He did indeed remember. He was there the last time Decker had tried to take her shot. The bullet missed by millimetres. It only missed because Kappel stumbled and fell at the last moment. Himmel had been standing about a couple of hundred metres in front of Kappel, waiting for him. That bullet could have hit him, something he was unable to forget, no matter how hard he tried.

It was at that point that Himmel said to Kappel that things were getting too dangerous and he should fake his own death. He knew some corrupt cops in the Spanish police who could make up a false incident report, and there were always forensic scientists and ‘witnesses’ who could be bought for a fee.

It had all worked beautifully until Kappel got it into his head to come back and look into a goddamn bank security camera, and steal some Nazi gold. Himmel would never directly criticise Kappel to his face, but privately he seethed that all of the hard work faking Kappel’s death had ultimately been for nothing.

“I give you a soft target to hit and you screw it up?” he said to the operative on the other end of the line. He was keeping his voice down to prevent the guards outside the hotel room from overhearing him, but there was no mistaking the tone in his voice. Someone would suffer for this when they got back.

“You’d better have your story straight for when Herr Kappel gets back” said Himmel, and hung up.

This could not have come at a worst time. The item had finally been shown to the others the previous night, and the upcoming plans were discussed. If the captured man talked, then everything they had worked so hard for would ultimately fall apart.

He called a trusted comrade, one he knew he could trust.

“The house is compromised” he said, when the call was answered. “Pack up and move to the secondary location.”

As he hung up, he looked back at the hotel room door. He had no idea how he was going to break this to Kappel. That one of his most senior men had managed to get himself involved in the Brandenburg Gate operation, and was now captured.

Suddenly he was not so keen for Kappel to emerge.
